How to Choose a Vitamin C Serum That Actually Works

Vitamin C is one of the few skincare ingredients with decades of research behind it. But not every serum delivers — formula and packaging make or break the results.

Pick the right form

L-ascorbic acid is the most studied and most potent form, but it’s also the least stable. If you have sensitive skin, gentler derivatives like sodium ascorbyl phosphate or THD ascorbate are easier to tolerate.

Mind the concentration

For L-ascorbic acid, 10–20% is the sweet spot. Below 8% you may not see much; above 20% you’re mostly buying irritation, not extra benefit.

Packaging is not a detail

Vitamin C oxidizes when exposed to light and air — that’s why a good serum comes in an opaque, air-tight bottle. If your serum turns dark orange or brown, it has oxidized and lost potency.

How to use it

  • Apply a few drops in the morning on clean skin.
  • Follow with moisturizer and sunscreen.
  • Introduce it slowly if your skin is reactive.

Bottom line: a well-formulated 15% L-ascorbic acid serum in dark packaging will outperform a pricier product that’s poorly stabilized. Store it cool and use it within a few months of opening.
